One thing I did accomplish this weekend; I finished Fat Girl a memoir by Judith Moore. I want to say I loved it, but I also found it gut-wrenching. There's a section where she likens herself as a fat little girl to a "wild animal." And although, as a fat child and teenager, I never thought of myself as exactly that, I felt different enough to feel somewhat sub-human and definitely undeserving.
Moore's prose is beautiful and resilient throughout. Foods as everyday as pickles are described as luscious objects of longing. One of my favorite quotes begins chapter 11, "When you are fat, you are fat every day." The simple observation encapsulates the on-going sinking feeling that often accompanies being fat.
The book is short (under 200 pages)and engaging so before you start it, make sure you have a few hours to spend because you won't want to put it down.
